The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
