Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
