Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
