RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
